This illustration was one of five made by Eric Pape for the serialized printing of Henry James' novella The Turn of the Screw in the printed periodical Collier’s Weekly. The image depicts the narrator of the story, the governess, encountering the spirit of Ms. Jessel, her predecessor, as she attempts to unravel the unnatural forces which she believes seek to harm the children of the manor.
